The Joy of Variety: Life as a Rural Consultancy
One of the hallmarks of running a small rural consultancy is variety—and my professional career certainly reflects that. At CASE, we’re generalists by necessity. In a place like Shetland, you need to be ready to turn your hand to almost anything. That’s what makes the work so interesting.
Over the past few months, my workload has included:
Clerk of Works on the deep renovation of 12 Local Authority properties in Whalsay
Structural engineering design for a new ramp and decking area at the Shetland Museum Boat Shed in Lerwick
Inspection of a large building conversion being transformed into much-needed residential flats
Structural assessment of a fire-damaged dwelling, working closely with the Quantity Surveyor
Reporting and specifying repairs for a property damaged by vehicle impact, as part of an insurance claim
Site visits and contractor queries for a new-build house in Bigton, designed by CASE Shetland
Concrete underpinning details for an extension to an old stone building in Sandwick
Managing reconstruction of a gable end suffering from ‘Sullom Block’ deterioration
Planning application for a new Active Travel foot/cycle path in Tingwall
Structural inspection and report for the Accommodation Building at Fair Isle South Lighthouse
And that’s just a snippet of what we do! Always varied, never dull.
